{"id":616,"date":"2012-12-31T10:41:05","date_gmt":"2012-12-31T15:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?p=616"},"modified":"2012-12-31T13:33:24","modified_gmt":"2012-12-31T18:33:24","slug":"pettys-rear-strut-tower-brace-unboxing-and-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?p=616","title":{"rendered":"Petty&#8217;s Rear strut tower brace &#8211; unboxing and installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Received my Petty&#8217;s Garage rear strut brace and wanted to do a unboxing and installing post.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get into the unboxing and installation part of this post, let me take a minute to talk about the service and speed of delivery I&#8217;ve received over the years purchasing from Petty&#8217;s Garage.\u00a0 While I&#8217;ve been very pleased at their service in the past, this part was ordered by my wife on Dec 21rd (Friday before the Christmas holiday) as a Christmas present. \u00a0 I was not expecting this to come in until after the new year. However I received a UPS notice that my package from Petty&#8217;s Garage was going to be delivered on Friday Dec 28th.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be honest with you, I really think these guys are Santa and his elves or they have licensed Santa&#8217;s exceptional delivery protocols. I am amazed at how quickly these guys and custom paint a part and have it at my door step in under 5 working days.<\/p>\n<p>On to the unboxing:<\/p>\n<p>As always the product came well packaged and wrapped with all the extra hardware safely tucked into it&#8217;s own packaging<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=620\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-620\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-620\" alt=\"_DSC4826\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4826-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4826-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4826-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4826-450x300.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4826.jpg 1996w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>** My only complaint is they must use the heaviest type tape to help hold the pad wrapping in place.\u00a0 I had problems cutting it with a brand new razor blade.\u00a0 You really want to be careful with cutting this TOP SECRET NASCAR approved packaging tape, making sure you don&#8217;t scratch your freshly painted brace.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=629\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-629\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-629\" alt=\"_DSC4853\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4853-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4853-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4853-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4853-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Included in the small envelope is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instructions (includes torque settings for strut tower and seat mount)<\/li>\n<li>cutout templates<\/li>\n<li>Hardware (4 cup retainers, 4 strut tower bolts, and 1 seat hing nut)<\/li>\n<li>standard Petty&#8217;s sticker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On to the installation&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>We first need pull down both back seats to gain access to the rear seat anchor points. We then need to remove the truck floor mat, which covers the spare tire and battery and is just laying in place<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=630\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-630\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-630\" alt=\"_DSC4854\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4854-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4854-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4854-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4854-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Next we need to remove the two side panels.\u00a0 These are held into place with plastic push pins. There are 4 locations inside the truck<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=667\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-667\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-667\" alt=\"trunk-lining-pin-locaitons\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/trunk-lining-pin-locaitons.jpg\" width=\"853\" height=\"982\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/trunk-lining-pin-locaitons.jpg 853w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/trunk-lining-pin-locaitons-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a>And one pin inside the cabin behind the rear seats. Then slide the brace over your existing strut tower studs.\u00a0 You will be using the included cup retainers over the strut&#8217;s bolts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=635\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-635\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-635\" alt=\"_DSC4864\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4864.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4864.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4864-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4864-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4864-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a>Place the two nuts over the seat hinges and only hand tighten them for now<\/p>\n<p>Place both cup retainers and bolts onto the strut&#8217;s studs <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>(Thanks to Yahooligan over at Challengertalk.com<b>, <\/b>for noticing that I had the cups upside down in the picture below &#8211; also the picture below does not show the brace completely tightened onto the studs &#8211; as he mentioned it should be flush)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=639\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-639\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-639\" alt=\"_DSC4872\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4872.jpg\" width=\"2066\" height=\"1375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4872.jpg 2066w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4872-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4872-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4872-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2066px) 100vw, 2066px\" \/><\/a>You will want to torque the rear shock nuts to 35 foot pounds and the seat mounted bolts to 45 foot pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Now on to the hardest part, cutting out the trunk finish pieces to complete the installation<\/p>\n<p>Petty&#8217;s supplies you with only two templates and at first it&#8217;s a little confusing as you think you need three templates.\u00a0 You&#8217;re going to reuse the drivers sided template in reverse for the passenger side.<\/p>\n<p>Before using the template you will want to trim it to size.\u00a0 A little tip for cutting out the round hold in the center of the template is to only cut radius cuts as shown below, then tape the &#8220;pie slices&#8221; back and out of the way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=642\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-642\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-642\" alt=\"_DSC4877\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4877.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4877.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4877-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4877-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4877-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a>Once the templates are cut out and ready to use, I held them in place with blue painters tape. First make you round hole cut.\u00a0 I made mine with a 1 1\/4&#8243; round hole cut bit, attached to my drill.\u00a0 Make sure you only cut through the outer material and not the insulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=644\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-644\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-644\" alt=\"_DSC4879\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4879.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4879.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4879-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4879-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4879-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once the hole is cut, line up a straight and plum vertical line (I used my blue painters tape as a guide) and cut with a good set of scissors. Again cutting through the outer material first and then cutting the insulation. Then remove the remaining insulation that&#8217;s behind the round hole you just cut.<\/p>\n<p>I also added some black gaffers tape to the inside edge of the insulation so the threads wouldn&#8217;t show through the cut line<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=646\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-646\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-646\" alt=\"_DSC4881\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4881.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4881.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4881-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4881-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4881-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a>Once all your cuts are finished and cleaned up, reinstall both side panels.\u00a0 Remember that the thicker plastic plugs go inside the trunk and the thinker plug goes inside the cabin, behind the seat back.<\/p>\n<p>At this point I also took the time to vacuum any dust and dirt from the spare tire area as well as the three pieces of trim work we are going to be putting back into the truck.<\/p>\n<p>Once the side panels are in place<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=649\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-649\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-649\" alt=\"_DSC4884\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4884.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4884.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4884-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4884-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4884-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a>You can now move onto the last piece you will need to cut to make way for the brace.<\/p>\n<p>You will have to cut the trunk floor mat to clear the small cross brace where it is attached to the rear seat hinge studs.<\/p>\n<p>I found the easiest and cleanest way to cut this was to use a hack saw with a new blade and then a dremel with cutoff wheel<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=650\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-650\" alt=\"_DSC4887\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4887.jpg\" width=\"2128\" height=\"1416\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4887.jpg 2128w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4887-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4887-1024x681.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC4887-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2128px) 100vw, 2128px\" \/><\/a>Once cut I used a razor knife to clean up any carpet threads and then a black magic marker to color the area I just cut (make sure you don&#8217;t slip and draw a line on the carpet itself (I came close)<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it, install the trunk floor mat over the spare tire, give it another quick swipe with the vacuum, fold the rear seats up and you&#8217;re all set<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myplumcrazychallenger.com\/?attachment_id=652\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-652\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
